Title: Natural Language Interface for Internet of Things

Dr Soo Yew Guan joins Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) as academician since 2001. Currently he is the Senior Lecturer in Microprocessor and Microcontroller Technology in the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Engineering (FKEKK). As a professional trainer in Embedded System, he has conducted CAN Bus Communication in in Embedded System training to Western Digital (M) Sdn Bhd and Internet of Thing (IoT) programs in Faculty. He is also actively involves in the faculty and university robotic team for various challenges and competition such as Robocon and MiROC. His research interests include Embedded System and Robotics, particularly on the myo-electric robotic prosthesis and sensory substitution for amputees. In addition, his is also interested in software development for various mobile platforms (iOS, Win8 Phone, and Android) and Internet Technologies (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and JSON). In 2014, he was attached to the R&D department at EV Dynamic Sdn Bhd, Subang Jaya. He was working on the design and development of the company smart-city related projects, particularly on the hardware accelerated encoding and decoding for video streaming purposes.

Sani Irwan Md Salim

Sani Irwan Md Salim obtained his first degree in B.Eng (Electronic Engineering), from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in 2002. Following that, he obtained his M.EngSc (Computer & Communication) from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. He is currently working as senior lecturer in the Computer Engineering Department, Faculty of Electronic and Computer Engineering, UTeM. His main research area is in reconfigurable computing with interest in FPGA applications.

Natural Language Interface for Internet of Things

This hands-on tutorial will be introducing the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistance together with the Espressif Embedded WiFi module and the open source Espurna firmware. No previous experience with embedded programming (C and Javascript) will be assumed. As an embedded solution, the framework can be used in basic and productive ways in Internet of Things (IoT) control; especially for the smart home applications. The format of the tutorial will consist of presentations of concepts and examples with hands-on exercises for participants. All necessary software is free and open-source, and detailed installation instructions will be provided.
